Tooth Extractions
If a tooth is damaged and cannot be saved through other procedures (such as a root canal), an extraction may be the best solution to protect the surrounding teeth from infection.
Hear From Our Tooth Extraction Patients Like You
Severe decay and injury are common causes of tooth extraction, but healthy teeth may also need to be extracted as a part of an overall orthodontic or oral surgery plan. Whether you need a single tooth extracted or multiple teeth removed, Dr. Smith and Dr. Stern are highly experienced in performing tooth extractions on patients of all ages and conditions.
Some of our Greater Columbus Oral Surgery & Dental Implant Center patients have shared their stories to help future patients just like you feel more comfortable about their tooth extraction procedure.
General Tooth Extraction
A tooth extraction is a common oral surgery treatment for many patients. The reason for extraction can vary. A tooth may need to be removed because of severe injury or decay. Other times, a healthy tooth is recommended for removal if there is not enough room to accommodate the extra tooth (or teeth), such as wisdom teeth, or a tooth may need to be removed as a part of a greater oral health plan, such as for further orthodontic or oral surgery treatment.
At Greater Columbus Oral Surgery & Dental Implants, we make every effort to ensure our patients remain safe and comfortable before, during, and after their procedure. When you have your first visit at our practice in Grove City and Powell, OH, Dr. Smith and Dr. Stern will personalize a treatment plan for you, which will include selecting the best anesthesia option. Please visit our Anesthesia Options page to learn more about the most common types of anesthesia used in oral surgery.
Why do teeth need to be removed?
Sometimes, a tooth plagued by severe decay can cause pain, infection, and other serious oral health complications when left untreated. A healthy tooth may need to be removed if there is not enough room in the mouth, if they are impacted, or to avoid oral health complications like dental misalignment. If one or more of your teeth have been recommended for extraction, it is because your dental health provider has determined that it is in the best interest of your oral health.
Common causes for tooth removal include
- Serious decay, infection, and/or gum disease
- Dental crowding and alignment problems
- Injury, such as a tooth that is broken beyond repair
- Root canal failure
- Prevention of oral health complications
If one tooth or many teeth need to be extracted, your oral surgeon may recommend a tooth replacement as a part of your treatment plan. Your oral surgeon will evaluate your personal oral health condition and discuss your treatment plan during your consultation appointment. Please visit our Tooth Replacement Options page to learn more about the types of replacement solutions that may be available to you.
