Anesthesia

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are experts when it comes to diagnosing and treating the complex structures of the head, mouth, teeth, and jaws. In addition to their years of additional training beyond dental school to perform the broad scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery, oral surgeons are also qualified to safely administer anesthesia. At Greater Columbus Oral Surgery & Dental Implants, we offer several options for anesthesia to ensure our patients feel comfortable and relaxed during their procedure.

We understand that oral surgery can produce varying feelings of anxiety for many patients. At Greater Columbus Oral Surgery & Dental Implant Center, we want you to know that this is normal, and we will do everything that we can to ensure you feel at ease every step of the way. The anesthesia selected for your procedure will be determined at your consultation appointment and depends on factors such as health history, type of oral surgery procedure, and personal preference.

TYPES OF ANESTHESIA

You may receive one of the following types of anesthesia for your oral surgery procedure:

  • Local anesthesia. This type of anesthesia is administered straight into the site to provide localized numbness to the area. This provides pain relief while allowing the patient to remain fully conscious.
  • Nitrous oxide. The sedative is inhaled through a mask that fits over the nose and provides feelings of relaxation. Also known as laughing gas, it is commonly used in combination with local anesthesia.
  • Intravenous (IV) sedation. Administered directly into a vein, IV sedation allows the patient to enter a sleep-like state. Many dental implant and wisdom teeth removal patients receive this type of anesthesia for their procedure
  • Hospital or Surgery Center-Based General Anesthesia. If a procedure is particularly complex or extensive, a patient may be treated in a hospital or surgery center. If this is the case, general anesthesia is typically used. A patient is completely unconscious under the effects of general anesthesia.
